Hoodoo Creek

Synopsis

A short, but steep hike along a narrow canyon to views of the hoodoos.  These hoodoos are quite unique as all most all are capped by flat rocks on their top.

From the parking area a sign points you down the direction of a old grown-over gravel road.  A short flat walk of 900m down this road brings you to a new (2018) bridge over Hoodoo Creek.  Cross over the bridge and start the climb.  It’s a fairly steep, unrelenting climb.  It gets most steep at the final end.

The initial portion of the hike gives you a great look at Mt Hunter back behind you (east) across the highway.  To the south are wide open views of the Beaverfoot Valley.  The trail eventually follows above Hoodoo Creek with views below of the creek forming a staircase along it’s route through the narrow canyon.

After about 1.5km from the new bridge (mentioned above), you will come to a junction point.  The left path continues up for another 325m (5min) to the upper viewpoint of the hoodoos.  Alternatively, from the junction point the right path winds down for 200m (2min) to the creek at the base of the Hoodoo formations.

The hoodoo formations are tall slender columns up rock, silt, and gravel.  Erosion has worn away all but the consolidated calcareous parts of the bank.

From the junction of Highway 95 and Highway 1 in Golden, drive east on the Trans Canada Highway (towards Lake Louise) for 32.5 km to the Hoodoo Campground turnoff.

Turn right at the turnoff and follow the road for 0.7 km to it’s end (you will pass the turn off to the campground on your left just before the end of this road).

Park here.  There is a sign pointing to the gravel road you will walk; a cable prevents you from driving this gravel road.
